How Long Does Ramadan Last

Ramadan is the festival of Muslims. It is the ninth month of Islamic calendar. Ramadan is said to be the month of fasting for the Muslims and is one of the pillars (duties) of Islam to be followed by the Muslims. It is believed that during the month of Ramadan the holy Quran was revealed, so all the

Muslims should dedicate themselves to Allah during Ramadan by visiting mosque and reciting Ramadan Dua’s. During Ramadan (the month of fasting), Muslims have meals twice a day. One meal before the sunrise called suhoor and one after the sunset called Iftar.delicious food items are cooked on the occasion of Ramadan like:

  • Fig and lemon chicken
  • Nutritional lentil soup
  • Moroccan soup
  • Beef meatballs
  • Tomato sauce
  • Fresh fig cake
  • Rich semolina cookies

  • Ramadan last for 29 to 30 days that is one month. The beginning and the end of Ramadan can only be decided when the crescent moon is sighted. Ramadan starts with the new moon. There is always a collision among Muslims to decide when would Ramadan begin and end? According to the Traditional method, mentioned in the holy book Quran it is to look at the sky and sight the crescent moon (hilal). This Sighting of the hilal marks the beginning of the Ramadan. Once the Ramadan beginning is decided the fasting starts. Muslims say no to food, drink, sexual activities and smoking during the daytime. They spend most of their time remembering Allah and reciting Ramadan prayers. Apart from the Daily five prayers Muslims also recite a special prayer called Taraweeh prayer also called the night prayer. Some of the Muslims spend their entire night Praying to Allah. During the entire month of Ramadan the Lailatul Qadr is the most special night for all the Muslims who fast. It is believed that Lailatul Qadr night falls during the last 10 days of Ramadan during the odd days like 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th. But many Muslims believe this night of power to be on 27th as it was originally on that day.

Once the month of Ramadan is over then comes the time to celebrate, spread happiness and love, as it is Eid-Ul-Fitr. When the crescent moon (hilal) is visible again at the end of the month, it is the time to celebrate Eid-Ul-Fitr (break the fast). On this occasion all the Muslims visit mosque in the morning and a get together is held in the daytime. Children enjoy this occasion as they receive gifts and sweets from their relatives.

Hence Ramadan last for one full month when all the Muslims stick to fasting and the end of Ramadan gives a beginning to Eid-Ul-Fitr….
